Chair Seat Restoration

Welcome to the GWV Chair Caning and Cord Shop!

At Green Wall Vintage, we specialize in the art of traditional hand-caning and cord weaving. Whether you have a cherished family heirloom, a mid-century modern classic, or a favorite antique that has seen better days, we can meticulously bring it back to life.

We work with a wide variety of materials and traditional techniques to match your furniture's original craftsmanship:

🧵 Our Specialties

  • Traditional Hole Caning

Hand-woven step-by-step through individual holes in the frame of your chair. This classic technique creates the iconic, intricate hexagonal pattern that is both beautiful and resilient.

  • Sheet Caning (Press Cane)

For chairs with a groove around the seat frame rather than individual holes. We tightly secure pre-woven cane webbing into the channel using a spline, restoring its clean, original look.

  • Danish Cord Weaving

The hallmark of Mid-Century Modern furniture. Using authentic 3-ply paper cord, we weave classic patterns (like the basketweave or L-lacing) to perfectly restore Danish classics like Hans Wegner or Moller chairs.

  • Seagrass Weaving

A durable, rustic option with a beautiful natural texture. Seagrass is tightly twisted and woven over the seat rails, creating a robust, multi-toned finish perfect for MCM, country, or coastal furniture.

  • Paper Rush OR Splint Weaving

Rush Weaving: Traditional twisted paper rush or cord tightly wrapped around the four seat rails to form four distinct triangles meeting in the center (or two trapezoids and two triangles depending on the shape of the chair).

Splint Weaving: Strips of rattan are wrapped front-to-back (warp) and then laced side-to-side (weft) using geometric twill patterns—most commonly a herringbone pattern.

Both techniques and materials offer an iconic, timeless look for shaker, ladderback, and country chairs.
  • Shaker Tape Weaving

This tape (actually a tightly woven cotton) is used to weave seats for post-and-rung chairs and stools. It provides a resilient, comfortable seat surface that retains its flexibility in use. Offered in a range of classic Shaker colors, two or more can be combined to create patterns, ranging from simple checks to bold geometric design. This is a more economical, modern option for chairs that were once woven with rush, rawhide, or splint reed.
